According to the CPI Inflation Calculator, per day Jesse was earning the equivalent of $52.04 in 2019 dollars. Over five days, that gross amount was $8.75 in 1901 and had the same spending power as $260.21 in 2019. Board at $4.00 in 1901 is the same as $118.95 in 2019. In 1901, Jesse netted after room and board $4.75, which is the same as $141.26 today. With no taxes, insurance, utility bills, cellphone, gas, or car payment, that might not be so bad!
