20th – Geo. & I took load of logs to Mark’s. I got a toe put on one of Frank’s shoes. Pa & geo. drove Charley to Utica.

As noted in the February 5th entry from a couple of weeks ago, it is difficult to determine who is Mark. It might be safe to assume though that Jesse does not mean his little brother Charley, but rather the horse Charley that he and George have been breaking in the last couple of days.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. When goods were less disposable and not made from synthetics, it was necessary and possible to repair goods before throwing them out to the burn pile. Below is a link to repairing a toe cap on a leather boot:
