22nd – Hauled a load of corn for the calves & worked in the stables. Geo. & Old Charley cut sprouts & John went down to Kisler’s & got the pile driver.

Here is the mysterious Old Charley again. He was mentioned a couple of times last summer, and he’s not a horse because he is working with horses or doing something that a horse can’t do, like pitching hay. Maybe he’s a neighbor?

Hermann H. Kesler borrowed the Bench pile driver a couple of weeks ago.

Assuming that farmers with lots of land had steam tractors at the time, the pile driver would have been an accessory that Mr. Kesler borrowed to use with his tractor. While there are examples of a steam pile driver online, none of them are small scale for a tractor.
