8th, Frank, Charley & I fixed fence in forenoon & gathered a load of corn in evening. We then went down to Smiths (at night) & cut corn.
Smith might be John Michael Schmid, one of the neighbors who Jesse previously mentioned, although in a couple of months Jesse will write of a Tom Smith, but this person does not show up in any census records around Utica, Missouri, in 1900. It could also be that the brothers went to their brother-in-law’s Robert Smith’s farm to help with cutting corn.
