20 thru 26th — Picked apples & corn. We now have 406 Bu. of apples. Pa sold 11 head of steers this week. $333.00 for them. “Old Oct. purty nigh gone”. Raining this morning.

According to the inflation calculator, $333 in 1901 has the same spending power as $10,058.91 in 2019. Each cow would have brought in $30.27, and that would equal about $913.46 today, although steers sell for at least twice that in today’s market. For city-folk and others who are unfamiliar with cattle, a steer is a male bovine that was castrated before reaching sexual maturity, and is one of the choice types for beef. This sounds like an ox, but an ox is castrated after reaching sexual maturity and then trained to do draft work.
