Sept.6th – We bid Callie & Family goodbye & bought our tickets for San Francisco. Cost $9.80. Left Castella at 8:15 & landed in Sacramento at 5:00 Sat. Morning.
At this point, Jesse, John, and Cousin Tom have worked for three months on the railroad around Castella, California. They performed hard manual labor, saw a few physical altercations, helped the Chinese cook prepare meals for the gangs, earned a daily wage working for a company, and spent their free time with Cousin Callie and her family. Jesse and John are now taking a proper vacation and going down to San Francisco. While it’s possible that Cousin Tom Allen accompanied them on this leg of their bachelor trip, Jesse never mentions Tom departing back to northern California when Jesse and John left for Missouri.
It isn’t clear if each ticket was $9.80 or if that was the cost for both (or three) of them to ride. In 1901, $9.80 had the same spending power as $295.81.
