3rd – it rained everyday last week, but could see Mt. Ranier this morning, 100 miles away. It is clouding up now. I guess it is going to rain some more. Worked at the mill this evening. John & I had a good time playing Crokenole with May & Iva.

Mount Rainier is a massive volcano. So far, we have not found a view of Rainier from Gate City, Washington, but the Thurston Talk website has a page on Rainier images, presumably taken from Thurston County.

Mae Ernst is one of the “2 mighty fine looking girls” at the Mascot Hotel that is run by her father Frederick Ernst. She is 18 years old in 1901 and she goes on to marry Ernest Wolf in Clark County, Washington, in 1908.

Iva Iona Watson was 11 years old. While she was born in Wisconsin in 1889, her family is documented in the 1900 federal census as farming in Vermont. Less than a year later, her family is apparently staying at Fred Ernst’s hotel. In 1905 at 16 years old, Iva married William Winfield McClellan. After William died in 1912, she married Ora Glen Bates.
