26th – I took a load of wood to Chilli. this morning & cut a load & brought home. Got me a ring today. $2.60. Went up to Mary’s to see if it would fit. A little too large.

As Jesse is not one to confide in his diary, this is the first that readers are hearing about any ring. It sounds like he bought the ring in Chillicothe, and it could have come from a few places. W. E. Crellin sold jewelry and optical accoutrements. M. L. England had a store on the west side of the square and sold jewelry. Both advertised in the Chillicothe Constitution at that time (create an account for free access!). According to the inflation calculator, $2.60 in 1901 has the same buying power as $76.99 in 2019.
