According to the 1900 federal census, James Reed Campbell was born in Virginia in 1851. His parents Thomas Key and Mary Clark Campbell moved their family to Chillicothe, Missouri, sometime between 1870 and 1878. Most of the family is buried at Mount Olive or Edgewood Cemeteries in Chillicothe. In 1879, James married Harriett Louise Hale. At the time of the 1900 census, they have five children living with them: Mary Elizabeth, Margaret Eglantine, Pearl D., Thomas Key, and James Robert.
