20th, tore shingles off of corn crib & hauled them down to the house. John, Walter Hunley, Pa, Geo., & I went to Chilli for a load of shingles.

This suburbanite never heard of a corn crib outside of the song from The Music Man.  While Jesse would never be suspected of hiding a dime novel in a corn crib, it seems to suggest that a corn crib is in the purview of young men, and an ideal place to hide contraband from the womenfolk and disapproving paternal figures.
