Helan Schmid’s and her brother Ottas’ father John Michael Schmid immigrated to Utica, Missouri, in 1870, and in 1878 married another German immigrant, Fenne Schon.  To assimilate, the family went by the English names Helen, Otis, and Fanny Smith.
