Oscar Lionel Wood was born on January 25, 1871. He married Viola Mary Dorrance on November 8, 1891, in Pettis County, Missouri. They had Cecil, William Jewell (like the college in Liberty, Missouri), Harold, and Christopher Columbus Wood.
Jesse first mentions Oscar on July 22, 1900 as the pastor giving the sermon that day. Oscar, Viola, and Cecile, William Jewell, and Harold are documented on June 7, 1900, as living in Liberty, Missouri. Either they moved to Utica, Missouri, or Oscar travels around and gives sermons to different churches in the area. He is the pastor who conducts the marriage ceremony for Jesse and his wife Mary Frances Frazier in 1901. Jesse doesn’t mention him again after 1901.
Like many preachers, Oscar and his family moved around a lot and lived in Missouri, Kansas, and Texas. Viola died in 1919 in Springfield, Missouri.
In 1900, Nellie Rockhold was an 18 year-old girl in Utica when Oscar started preaching at the Baptist Church there. In the same year, Nellie went to college in Kirksville, Missouri, and became a teacher. Years later, she married Oscar in 1921, and they had one child. It would be interesting to know how they kept in touch and how they met up again after so many years.
In 1953, Oscar died in Newton, Kansas, and Nellie had him buried next to Viola.
