15th – Worked at the mill. Got in 6 days this week. I have worked 13 days at the mill so far. Worked one day in camp. $2.25. 14th Went to S.S. I was Superintendent today. Mr Couch came up today from Oakville. After dinner John, Kittie Buckley, Lawrence Brown, Myrtle Duby, Francis Smith & I went to the mill & had a ride on the rush cars & all of us went out on the logs & walked clear across the river on the boom. Went home with Francis. Ate supper there & then we all went to church at night.

In 1901, $2.25 had the same spending power as $67.29 in 2019. Jesse isn’t clear on what this amount was. Was it net after room and board? Gross? Either way as savings or gross, one could question how lucrative this venture has been for Jesse.

Perhaps if Jesse was filling in as superintendent of the sunday school, it meant that he kept everything organized and moving, and that the teacher had what was needed, or maybe he ran the sunday school class himself.

If anyone has a good description of what a rush car is at a lumber mill, please send us a line!
