11th – Mary & I drove Old Black Prince & went to Chilli. Ate dinner at her Aunt Mary Smith’s. In the afternoon we had our pictures taken. Roads muddy.

Jesse’s and Mary’s granddaughter Carmen Dawkins Burgett recalled the fact that Mary went to a hair dresser to get her hair put up in the stylish Gibson Girl pompadour for this picture. Jesse still doesn’t mention his upcoming trip, but it might be safe to assume that this picture was taken to mark their engagement, or to give Mary something to remember him by. Did they have two copies made so that he could take one with him?
